Roseland Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking has arrived in Gorran Haven

For the first time, there is a Nordic Walking UK group on the Roseland Peninsula.

You may have seen us out and about with our Nordic poles.. and wondered what on earth we were doing!

Roseland Nordic Walking offers so much more than just walking.  Nordic Walking is a full body workout and intensive calorie burner! Plus, it’s fun and social too; the group runs special events, holidays, fitness classes, online workouts and much more.

What is Nordic Walking?

Nordic walking, originally Finnish, is fitness walking with specially designed poles.

The concept was developed based on off-season ski-training activity while using one-piece ski poles.

Ski racers, deprived of snow have always used and still do use their one-piece ski poles for ski walking and hill bounding. The first poles specially designed and marketed to fitness walkers were produced in 1988 and the term ‘Nordic Walking’ came into being in 1999.

Elizabeth’s Story

I had always dreamed of walking the length of Britain, but my back and knee issues were a big worry. Not one to shy away from a challenge, I signed up for the JOGLE (John O Groats to Lands’ End) and began meeting and training with my local Nordic Walking UK group.

Over the coming months, my muscle strength grew, reducing my back and knee issues, my weight dropped, and I was walking fit to embark on the journey.

With this newly mastered skill, achieving the 1000-mile(!) JOGLE in 2013, (I took in some national paths on the way, making it a little longer than the standard 860 miles), became a much easier prospect, and when I had finished, I couldn’t stop walking!

So, I became a Nordic Walking Instructor and have led Nordic Walking groups since 2014, taking in regular weekly walks, 25-100k charity walks, and walking holidays such as the Camino Way.

Now, I have set up Roseland Nordic Walking to do the same: regular weekly walks to cater for all abilities, special events, fitness classes both in person and online.  Our regular walks range from 1-6 miles, and there are many special events in the pipeline. I’m really looking forward to showing people in our local area the benefits of Nordic Walking. Perhaps it will even change your lives too, the way it changed mine.”

How Nordic Can Benefit you

Nordic Walking is not only great fun and but an extremely effective form of exercise.

Nordic walking builds muscle strength, raises your heart rate, and burns 46% more calories than normal walking.

Since joining us, clients have increased joint strength, reduced heart rate, and of course, increased their fitness. One client even credits Nordic Walking for a speedy recovery following a fall.

According to research, both Nordic walking and conventional walking are beneficial for older adults. However, Nordic walking provides additional benefits in muscular strength compared to conventional walking, making it suitable for improving aerobic capacity and muscular strength as well as other components of functional fitness in a short period of time.

Many people struggle to maintain a regular exercise routine. By joining our group and  having walks booked in your diary gives you the accountability you need to get out and get active.

We are a sociable group with a passion for nature and the great outdoors, so moonlit walks, solstice walks, and embracing nature are a big part of what we enjoy.  And of course, we all enjoy a little time embracing good company with our lunches and coffees at the end of some walks.
